This report will focus on Klamath River Steelhead. It is that time of year where I venture north to the Klamath River to chase Steelhead. The fish of a thousand casts have returned and we are only putting in about 500 casts between fish. Well, at times only three or four casts will do it! It has started off super nice but now looks like we are in for some major rain. Heading downstream to do a trip with #wildwatersflyfishing we will see how see goes. The fall colors are starting to change which is worth the trip.
Klamath River Conditions
The flows at Iron Gate are 975cfs and 1230cfs at Seiad Valley. The water temps are prefect and the visibility is typical Klamath River brown green at this point.
Klamath River Tactics
The Klamath River Steelhead tactics are to setup for warm water conditions. Swinging Flies on a floating line or light tip has duped a few nice fish. This should be pretty consistent until the next big temperature drop. Nymphing has been great as well. We have even hooked up on some super fresh salmon that were kind enough to let us have our fly lines back.
Klamath River Suggested Flies
Suggested Flies here are not too complicated but should look like the caddis, stoneflies, and october caddis that are in the system. Run what you are confident in. For swinging patterns try the Green Butt Skunk, Burlap, Silver Hilton, Herniator, and Muddler. For nymphing patterns try Eggs, Rubberlegs, Prince nymphs, Copper Johns, and Bird of Prey.
Klamath River Summary
The Steelhead fishing on the Klamath has been good for swinging and nymphing both. This next rain even could change things and raise the water downstream. Check the USGS streamflow before you go. Have fun and enjoy.
