This Veteran's Day report will focus on the Truckee River. We have had a very nice fall in the Truckee area, and the fishing has been pretty darn good. Mild temps and a few rain/snow storms have been the only disruptions to an otherwise perfect fall. Change is in the air. There is a small storm to start the week and another on the horizon. The overnight lows are getting colder, down in the teens and low 20's. This is going to slow down the fishing a bit. Time to transition to low and slow for the next few months. The fish are starting to move into the slower and deeper sections of the river. The bugs have started to get smaller as well. Blue Winged Olives (BWO's) and Midges are going to be the staple in the trout's diet moving forward. What a great fall it has been!
Truckee River Conditions
Truckee River flows are currently 78 cubic feet a second above town and 449 cubic feet a second below Boca inflow. The water is very clear and temps very with conditions but have been in the 42-46 range.
Truckee River Tactics
Truckee River tactics for these conditions vary by which stretch of river you are in. Above Boca inflow or below? Above Boca is much lower and clearer. Nymphing techniques and Dry/Dropper where appropriate will work just fine. Below Boca is much bigger water with some turbidity. Deep Nymphing and Streamers would be my choice down there. The water is cooling off and the fish are moving into slower current seams and pools where they don't need to expend much energy. Watch the water temps and fish the heat of the day. Big storms coming up could change conditions so adapt as needed.
The bugs have been active and there has been afternoon hatches of BWO's, Caddis, and Midges. The October Caddis I thought were done but, I saw a few out one day last week and the fish noticed them too and ate my orange Chubby!

Truckee River Summary
The Truckee River has been great. With the lastest weather changes expect it to slow down a bit. The river is basicly two different rivers above and below Boca inflow. Fishing the heat of the day and get your offering down to the fish and the water is cooler. Good luck out there.
