Truckee Tahoe Fly Fishing Report March 1, 2024

4seaslusser

Welcome to a mini spring! This report will focus on the Truckee River. Really couldn't ask for nicer weather except that we need more snow for the summer. We have had recent storms but like all of the storms this year they have been warmer. Not much snow in town and snow on the ridge tops. It's just enough to make the access a bit muddy for parking. The fish are diffinitely more active this week with the warmer weather. I have had several reports of rising fish mid-day. This time of year you don't have to get out early. Go make some runs on the ski slopes and fish in the afternoon once the water temp has come up a bit.

Truckee River Conditions

The current flows on the Truckee River are 139 cubic feet a second above town and 598 cubic feet a second below Boca. Water temps east of Truckee is 42 degree at 1pm. Clarity is good throught town and get a little turbid below Boca but very fishable.

Truckee River Tactics

Truckee River Tactics for this report would be to carry two rods. A nymphing set-up and a dryfly set-up. Nymphing is the goto for best success all day. Work low and slow. The fish are cold and not going to move too far. As your moving around you might find a pod of fish working Midges and BWO's. This is where the dryfly setup will come in handy Haven't seen any Skwallas yet but they should be starting soon with this weather.

Truckee River Suggested Flies

Truckee River suggested flies: for dry flies try the Parachute Adams 16-22, Thorax Dun 16-22, Compara Dun16-22, Skwalla Stone 10-12, Royal Wulff 14-16, Chubby Chernoble 10-12, Quigley Cripples 16-22, and RS-2 16-22. For nymphs: Haresear 16-20, Micro May 16-22, Rainbow Warrior 16-22, Zebra Midge 18-22, Pheasant Tail 16-20, Flashback PT 16-20, Perdigons 16-20, SJW, Copper Johns 16-20, Prospector 16-18, Frenchie 16 -20, Rubber legs 10-14, Twenty Incher 10-14, and Princes 14-18.

Truckee River Summary

The Truckee is fishing better than last month. The flows are up a bit around town and difinately higher down below boca with the latest rain and warm up. Nymphing has been the best and there has been some topwater activity as well. Worth a shot in the afternoon.
