Truckee Tahoe Fly Fishing Report June 5th, 2024

Updated: Jun 5

This report will focus on the Truckee and Little Truckee Rivers. We are still getting pretty good runoff with the warm weather. This warm up also has the river temps starting a bit especailly in the afternoon. This will get the bugs going. In fact, I saw my first good flight of Ants yesterday. Ants around here are one of the first big bugs get the fish to look up and eat. Love this time of the season. The Truckee has been fishing good as the flows are bouncing up and down. Still have to pay attention wading some areas are still too big to cross. Nymphing is working good but have I spotting working fish and caught them on a dries. There have been some light Mayfly hatches mid-day. Over on the LT fishing has been slow due to all of the spawning fish. Once they get done and back on the feed bag it should be pretty good despite the higher flow. Nymphing, dries, and streamers have all picked up a few fish. And, on the reservoirs the inlets are still a good bet. As the water warms up the Smallmouth bite should pick up as well. They are getting close to full.

Thanks to all of the ladies that have signed up for my Women's only clinic. Response was so good I added another day and filled that too. And I still have room for my Trout Spey Clinic.

Truckee River Conditions

Truckee River flows are 573cfs above Truckee and 857cfs below boca. There is still quite a diurnal flow change each day. Clarity is good and afternoon temps are in the low 50's.

  • update: Tahoe releases have been upped to 300cfs this afternoon.

Truckee River Tactics

Truckee River tactics for this report would be to bring it all. There is plenty of water to cover and all of the bugs are gearing up to hatch this summer. Whatever your style of fly fishing there are plenty of places try different techniques. Each day is a little different. I don't feel like the fish have moved to the pocket water just yet. Fish the tailouts, edges, and slower eddies.

Truckee River Suggested Flies

Truckee River Suggested flies are all of them. Why, well because the bugs are all starting to be available for the fish. Ants are up now next week PMD's or Caddis next. You may have to mix it up a bit to solve the puzzle.

Truckee River Summary

The Truckee River is in fine shape all though still a little high to get cross in most places and below Boca is still pretty large. Lots of bugs starting to get active with some mid-day hatches. Worth a shot whatever your favorite style of fly fishing is.

Little Truckee River Conditions

The Little Truckee River flow is 556cfs and the clarity is good. Water temps are 48-50 degrees mid-day.

Little Truckee River Tactics

Little Truckee River Tactics for these flows would put deep nymphing as the first choice for consistant hookups. Fish are coming up occasionally but not super dry fly fishing. Fish the slower edges and drops. Streamers are also a good choice with these flows. Wading is challenging at these flow so pay attention.

Little Truckee River Suggested Flies

Little Truckee River suggested flies for these conditions. Mayflies, Midges, and Caddis are all out and about as well as ANTS. The big ones! The fish like the smaller sizes here but I don't think you need tiny at this time.

Little Truckee River Summary

Little Truckee River has been a bit slow but should pick up. The bigger water lends itself to deep nymphing yet there are a few fish coming up to take dries.
