Truckee Tahoe Fly Fishing Report June 5th, 2022

The Truckee area is off to a great start this season. This report will focus on the Truckee and Little Truckee Rivers. We have water, we have had great weather for fishing, and we have had some cooperative fish. Yes we have landed fish on the dry fly but had to work for it. Nymphing and streamers are the ticket right now. Things are starting to open as the flows are slowly dropping on most rivers and creeks. This month is shaping up to have really good conditions for fly fishing. I would suggest getting here now instead of August!

Before August we have two clinics available.

Truckee River Conditions

The Truckee River flows are 400cfs in town and 650 cfs at Boca. Water temps are cool in the morning at 48 degrees and warming nicely most days to the low 50's. Water clarity is very good. There is about a 50cfs +/- diurnal change in flows each day.

Truckee River Tactics

Truckee River tactics have not changed much since my last report. Nymphing is going to be the most productive method. You will need some lead to get in the zone. There are some decent hatches mid-day but not a lot of fish looking up at this time. That will change. Streamers are also a good choice early or late in the day.

Truckee River Suggested Flies

Truckee River suggested flies at this time. For dry/dropper rigs the Stimulator 10-14, Royal Wulff 8-10, Double Dutch 18-10, and Chubbies 8-10. If you spot some rising rise, here are some dries to try: Ants 10-12, Thorax Dun 12-18, Hackle Stacker 12-18, Parachute Adams 12-18, Quigley Cripple 12-18, Griffiths Gnat 16-20, Midges 18-22 and Compara Dun 16-20. For nymphs: Haresear 12-14, Pat's Rubberleggs 8-12, Mercer's Poxyback Stones 10-12, 20 incher 8-12, Burk's Bottom Roller 14-16, Pheasant Tail 12-14, Flashback PT 12-14, Perdigons 14-16, SJW, Copper Johns 12-14, Frenchie 12-14, and Princes 10-12. For Streamers: Woolley Bugger 6-10, Sculpzilla 4-8, Dolley Llama 6, and Peanut Envy 4-6.

Truckee River Summary

Truckee River is fishing well but you're going to have to work for your fish. Flows are slowly dropping and conditions for nymphing and streamer fishing are good. Choose your technique and give it a shot. Dry fly season is just around the corner.

Little Truckee River Conditions

The flows on the Little Truckee are at 155cfs. Water temp is consistent because it is a tailwater. Water clarity is good.

Little Truckee River Tactics

Little Truckee River has had pretty consistent flows for a while and therefore pretty consistent fishing. There is a nice mid-day beats hatch and the ants have been sort of popular for the top water aficionados. Some Caddis are popping in the evening and we managed to dupe a few on Caddis dries. Nymphing with smaller beats under an indicator or dry has been working well, too. The angler hatch has also been pretty strong so be prepared to see some other folks.

Little Truckee River Suggested Flies
