Truckee Tahoe Fly Fishing Report July 24th, 2024

The Truckee and Little Truckee Rivers are fishing super good right now. The fish are looking up! The Dryfly action has been outstanding. Who doesn't like to see a fish come up and crush a fly. Flows are currently good. Water temps on the Truckee are up and you should use your thermometer fish accordingly on the Truckee. The Little Truckee is a tailwater and the current flows and water temps are fine to fish all day. Some nice hatches out there as well getting the fish up off the couch.

Truckee River Conditions

The Truckee River is flowing at 266 cubic feet a second above town and 459cfs below Boca. Water temps are are hitting 68 degrees around 11am depending where your at in the system. Clarity is good.

Truckee River Tactics

Truckee River Tactics are to fish early here. Water temps are too warm to play with the fish in the afternoon and evenings. Use your thermometer and quit when it is too warm. And with this warm up the fish have moved into the faster pockets and deeper slots. Dryfly action has been great in the first few hours. Lots of Caddis about and managed to catch the spinner fall one morning as well. Towards the end of the morning switch to Dry/Dropper and have some fun til it is time to move on. Nymphing works but why when fish are willing to come up to eat? Streamer fishing has slowed but, yes the bigger fish do like a bigger meal just going to have to work hard for the grab.

Truckee River Summary

The Truckee River is fishing really well. Go early and quit when the waters temp rise. Dry or Dry/Dropper has been very good. The fish are very willing to eat a almost well presented fly.

Little Truckee River Conditions

The Little Truckee River flow is 167 cubic feet a second. The water temps here are good.

Little Truckee River Tactics

Little Truckee River tactics for these conditions are to be prepared to see other anglers. Be willing to fish someplace else besides the upper parking lot zone. A little respect will go along way. While these fish are picky it is the other things you do that matter. The chuck it a hope method doesn't work here. A stealth approach includes earth tone clothes, approach from behind, move slow, and step lightly along the bank. Then make a good cast and manage the line according to your situation. The fish seem to like the recent flow levels, which are good, and are willing to come out and play for a good presentation. Oh, all of the mayflies are in play so just bring all your flies.
