Welcome to the the New Year! This report will focus on the Truckee River and some tips to help with your winter fly fishing. We are off to a good start this winter with water and snow numbers coming in right around average for this time of year and we still have our wettest months to come. The storms of the last few weeks have had high snow levels and less snow down along the river corridor. Access is pretty good right now east of the town of Truckee. Here are a few tips for success in the area during our colder winter months.
Dress warm and in layers. Being comfortable is key to making it through the day. Daily temps can vary widely throughout the day around here so flexible upper layers are key. Socks are a little harder to change out quickly and your feet are usually in the coldest area, the water. I add extra thick socks but make sure not to get my boots laced too tight so I still have good circulation.
It is winter so the water is cold and the fish are a bit more lethargic then normal. With this in mind, here are my cold water fly fishing tactic/technique tips.
Fish during the warmer time of the day
Target the deeper, slower water
The bugs are smaller so use smaller flies and tippet down to 6x and 7x
While nymphing is the most productive there are times when good hatches happen and bring the fish to the top. So keep your eye out for those situations as they can be really productive.
Truckee River Conditions
The flows are 100cfs above town and 389cfs below Boca. Water temps have been 38 degrees mid-day. Clarity is very good above the Boca inflow and good below Boca.
Truckee River Tactics
See my tips above. Blue Winged Olives and Midges are making up the bulk of the insects right now. With some mid-day hatches.

Truckee River Summary
The Truckee River is in mid-winter conditions. Fish the heat of the day, nymphing low and slow for best results. Currently, the access is good but that may change with winter storms moving through. Check the weather before heading out. The warmer days will pride better fishing opportunities.
