Happy New Year! Welcome to the first fishing report of the season. This report will focus the the main #Truckeeriver. I don't plan on more than a monthly update at this point unless there are drastic changes. We are still dealing with the snow from the December storms and the weather, while sunny, has been kinda cold. It is January after all. Access is limited by parking since most of the parking is snow storage or not plowed like the Little Truckee for example. The farther down I-80 this less snow there is as well. I have gotten out for a few days of fishing and found a few willing participants waiting to do battle. This is the slowest time of the season so set those expectations accordingly and enjoy the solitude.
Truckee River Conditions
The Truckee River is 85cfs in town and 260cfs at Boca. Water temps are in the low 30's and may warm up a few degrees with warmer days. The water is Low, Cold, and Clear.
Truckee River Tactics
Truckee River tactics for low, cold, and clear are to use smaller bugs, light leader, lighter tippet. Try to be stealthy on your approach our group spooked a few fish from the edges by approaching the hole too quickly last week. Take your time and observe the situation. #Euronymphing has been good as well as indicator nymphing to keep out the of moss. The takes are slow and deliberate. While the little flies are out and about the fish have responded better to larger attractor patterns. Go figure they are cold and need a little motivation. Try to fish the heat of the day this time of year no need to start early. While we tried no fish were moving to the surface.
