Truckee Tahoe Fly Fishing Report August 13th, 2020

This report will focus on the Truckee and Little Truckee Rivers. I am a bit over due but that is because the fishing is good, not much has changed, and I have been getting some fishing in myself. The weather has been cool compared to the previous few summers and that is helping the water temp situation that usually developes this time of year on the Truckee River. Like it or not there is only 70cfs coming out of the lake and no rafting. With our heavy winter many of the side creeks are stilling flowing and the springs are flowing cold water as well. This and the cooler weather is keeping the water temp perfect for fishing on the Big Truckee.

Over on the Little Truckee the flows are great for this time of year. The water temps are good as well. It is very popular and you should expect to see other anglers out there as well. Last week there were some traffic delays due to fire prevention work going on next to the road. So expect to see some more of that as well this week but, they look pretty close to being finished with that section of road.

As we venture further out of Truckee the local creeks are also holding up quit well in the flow department and water temps. Much to my surprise. I thought is was great that we were able to still hit a few last month! The mosquitoes have backed off a bit too as things have started to dry up.

Truckee River Conditions

Truckee River flows are 96cfs above town and below Boca it is 527cfs. The mid-day water temps are 62-63 degrees. Thanks to no rafting the water is gin clear down to Boca inflow and pretty clear down there as well.

Truckee River Tactics

Truckee River Tactics are are a bit different in the lower flows above Boca where there has been some excellent Dryfly fishing till about noon. After noon Dry/dropper is keeping us into the fish. Caddis and Mayflies are out and about as well as some Stoneflies. Below Boca is perfect for all tactics but would be the place for Nymphing and Streamers.

Little Truckee River Conditions

The Little Truckee River flows are 128cfs. The mid-day temps are 56-58 degrees and the clarity is great. Really excellent conditions for August.

Little Truckee River Tactics

Little Truckee River Tactics for this time of year would be to start with some patience and be ready for some rejection. There are plenty of Mayflies and Caddis hatching throughout the day. And, in various sizes too. At certain points of the day the fish are up and eating dries. Then they stop for awhile and then they start again. Use good technique, approach with some stealth, and use a long leader with fine tippet. Dry/dropper technique can work well during the slow periods.
