Spring has spring here in Truckee after an epic late season snow storm. This report will focus on the Truckee River. The latest storm has added to the upper mountain snowpack which was a little below avererage so we are looking good for this summer. Currently, in our typical spring weather pattern sunny one day cloundy the next. It has not been freezing at night so the flows are coming up along with the air temps. The fishing has been good and there is still and pretty strong Blue Winged Olive hatch in the afternoon. Skwallas are out and about as are the Midges. With the higher water nymphing will be the technique of choice to get your flies in front of the fish. Have that Dryfly rod handy just in case!

A couple other points. 1) Access is good around the area but it is mud season. So becareful where you drive off the main roads around here or you could get stucke. 2) I have noticed that the Rainbow Trout are started to spawn so watch out for the redds and give the fish a chance to do their thing!

Truckee River Conditions

The current flows on the Truckee River are 349 cubic feet a second above town and 713 cubic feet a second below Boca. Water temps east of Truckee is 46-48 degrees at 1pm. Clarity is good throughout and very fishable. A spring rain shower could change that.

Truckee River Tactics

Truckee River Tactics for this report are to carry two rods. A nymphing set-up and a dryfly set-up. Nymphing is the goto for best success all day. Work low and slow. The fish are cold and not going to move too far. As your moving around you might find a pod of fish working BWO's and Skwallas. A Dry/droppper rig could be the ticket along the shallower edges.

Truckee River Suggested Flies

Truckee River suggested flies: for dry flies try the Parachute Adams 14-20, Thorax Dun 14-20, Compara Dun14-20, Skwalla Stone 10-12, Royal Wulff 14-16, Chubby Chernoble 10-12, Quigley Cripples 16-20, and RS-2 16-20. For nymphs: Haresear 12-18, Micro May 16-22, Rainbow Warrior 16-20, Zebra Midge 18-22, Pheasant Tail 12-18, Flashback PT 12-18, Perdigons 16-20, SJW, Copper Johns 12-18, Frenchie 16 -18, Rubber legs 10-14, Twenty Incher 10-14, and Princes 10-18.

Truckee River Summary

The Truckee fishing is good and we are into spring conditions. The flows are up and you'll need to adjust for the deeper water. Nymphing has been the most effective technique. Although there has been some nice hatches in the afternoons. Have fun!
