Truckee Tahoe Area Fly Fishing Report December 13th, 2019

Happy Holidays from Truckee! This report will focus on the #Truckee and #LittleTruckee Rivers. It has been a mild and wet start to winter here in Truckee and Snowing heavily at the ski areas and skiing has been great for this early of a start. The #FlyFishing has been pretty decent when I have been able to get out. That could change with the up coming weather this weekend.

Truckee River Conditions

The flow on the Truckee in Truckee is 150cfs and at Boca inlet it is 331cfs. Pretty nice for the amount of rain we have had. The clarity is good. Water temps vary with the weather but have been in the low 40's on the warmer days. So far access is good no problem with snow yet!

Truckee River Tactics

The Truckee River Tactics for this time of year generally are low and slow. Colder water means the fish are slow and hanging out where they don't have to do much. However, on the warmer sunny afternoons I have seen some decent BWO's hatching and fish rising to them. Not huge numbers of risers but a few. Lots of Midges as well. Nymphing or Dry Dropper techniques will work well this time of year. Start small then change if not having hook ups. Streamers are also a good bet. Through 'em some meat. You will want to check the weather before heading out and fish the heat of the day.

Truckee River Suggested Flies

For Dry Flies: Turcks Trantula 8-10, Stimulator 8-10, Cubby Chernoble 6-8, Parachute Adams 16-20, Compara Dun 16-18, Thorax Dun 16-20, Quigley Cripple 16-18, Spinner 16-22, and Griffiths Gnat 18-22. Truckee River Report Summary

The Truckee River is in good shape right now. There are some nice hatches with a few fish eating on top. Nymphing has been good. Access is good and may change with this weekends storm. Check the weather first before going out.

Little Truckee River Conditions

The flows on the Little Truckee are 121cfs. The water temp is in the low 40's and it is very clear. Access to the LT is good the road is mostly snow free. That may change this weekend! If you are fishing around the inlet beware of the mud! The reservoir shore line is wet and soggy. Best to park on solid rock or ground and walk down. I have seen a lot of stuck vehicles lately.

Little Truckee River Tactics

Tactics for the Little Truckee are similar to the Big Truckee in that nymphing smaller Beatis and Midges will be your best chance for success.

Little Truckee River Suggested Flies

For Nymphs try Soft Hackles 16-18, Prince Nymphs 14-18, Flashback Pheasant Tail 16-22, SJW, Flashback Haresear 16-18, Copper Johns 16-20, Micro May16-18, Zebra Midge 18-22, Juju Beatis 16-20, and Brassie 16-22

Little Truckee River Summary

The Little Truckee river is fishing good. Get out there while the getting there is good. This next storm system may put some snow on the road. Nymphing small bugs is the best technique for success here.
