Tahoe Fly Fishing Report Archives
|
Monday, December 8, 2008
I have started into my winter season working at Alpine and fishing less. It is *winter regulations* time here. Meaning barbless artificial's and zero kill on the Truckee from Trout Creek to the state-line and the Little Truckee between Boca and Stampede. The reservoirs are open and general regulations apply to them. The fishing has been good on the rivers during the heat of the day around 11am to 4pm give or take. It has been very nice lately witßh air temps getting up to the low 50's during the day. It it time for the weather to get nasty as we need some water in our reservoirs and rivers.
Truckee River **** The Truckee is Closed from Tahoe City to Trout Creek which is good because there is very little water in this area. From Trout Creek to Boca inflow is also very low. Water is being released from Boca. From Boca down to the state-line is going to be the best fishing, and it has been good. There has been some beatis and midges hatching occasionally with a few fish looking up. Nymphing has been the best tactic. A stonefly with a small midge or beatis trailer has worked well. PT's, copper johns, zebra midge and haresears (16-20).
Little Truckee River **** * * The "LT" has been fishing good as well. Surprised at the crowds it is still drawing this late in the season. The Browns have been spawning and looked to be finishing up that task. Much like the main Truckee there are midges and beatis hatching occasionally and some fish looking up. Mostly, it has been a nymphing game here as well. Stealth and small(18-22) bugs have been the ticket. There are some heavy fish in the stream now and landing one is a great feat, they have all of the tricks.
Boca, Prosser, Stampede *** * * All of the reservoirs are low and now would be the time to try for a big Mackinaw. There is not much natural flow coming into the reservoirs now so the fish seem to be more spread out then they were last year. If your not having any hookups, move. Stripping streamers and leeches with a small nymph trailing is an option. Hanging some midges under and indicator is another.
The fishing season here is starting to wind down a bit as I slooowly transition to winter activities. I would like to thank those of you who fished with me this season, and past, for supporting my little business.
Shooter and I look forward to seeing you again soon,
Brian
