Fly Fishing Report - Archives

September 18, 2006

It's been a busy month since the last report. Late in August Shooter and went on a little road trip to Whidbey Island in Washington. Along the way we fished the N. Umpqua with Mike Peters and landed a couple of fish on skaters. Good fun. Then stopped at The Kalama River for some more steelhead fun. And finally our destination on Whidbey Island were I got lots of casting practice fishing for Silvers. On our way home we stopped at the Rogue and had a pretty exciting day with half-pounders and even a few adults that took us to school.

Speaking of Steelhead, once again, I will be working at Morrison's Lodge on the Rogue River. Check out the Trips page. I still have a few open dates for Steelhead in October: 1,2,18,19,20,21,22,29,30,31. These dates, depending on availability, can be booked by calling the lodge at (1-800-826-1963).

I will be gone starting September 26th and not checking my e-mail. To contact me call the number at the top of the page or my cell (530-550-9870) and leave a message. I will return call as soon as I can.

As for the Truckee Area we are coming off a short cold snap with even a little snow on Friday. The weather should start to cool the area waters and send the fish in to there fall feeding frenzy.

High Country Lakes and Streams***

Great conditions right now the waters are low and cooling. The fish are spooky. Approach with some stealth and you should do fine. Ants, Parachute Adams, Elk Hair Caddis 14-18 and PT's and Hareseare's 14-18 underneath should be all your need.

Truckee River**-*** The river has been tough but should improve greatly with this cold snap. Through town, the flow is 185cfs, and below Boca is still a little high. When they drop the water it should pick-up. Nymphing or streamers are the best bet during the day. There are still some light hatches during the evening. Dries: E/C Caddis, Elk Hair Caddis, Para Adams, Quigley Cripples and Bivisable Duns 12-18. Nymphs: Copper Johns, BHPT's, Stones, Caddis Pupa 12-16.

Little Truckee*** The LT is fishing good and the flows are at 65cfs. These fish are educated and will not respond well to poor presentations. Bugs are still hatching during the mid-day PMD's, Flav's, Beatis, Midges, and the occasional Caddis. Hanging a small nymph (18-22) under the dry is working during the slower periods.

North Yuba*** Have been to the Yuba for a while but it should be fishing well with smaller (16-20) Bivisable Duns and Caddis. Black AP's and smaller nymphs (16-18) Should do the trick.

Local Reservoirs**-*** The trout have moved into deeper water 12-24 feet so target them with streamers and the appropriate sinking line. Slow trolling a Carey Special or Woolly Bugger was ticket for Prosser and Stampede last week. At Boca there are some big fish cruising the inlet area and a couple of large Mackinaw have been landed. Haven't tried for Bass recently but, they should be willing to eat anything.

See you on the River,

Brian
