Tahoe Fly Fishing Report Archives

Tuesday May 4, 2010

It looks like we are finally in for some warm, clear weather. About time! The extra water is great for the fish. The next two weeks will be the last opportunity to ski at the resort and fish in the same day. Alpine will be closing on the 16th. The fishing has been up and down with the up days being pretty good. This is the time of year is when you tend to tangle with some of the Big Boys of the river. It is mostly and subsurface game but, a few fish are looking up and if you move around enough they can be found.

Tip of the Month

As the weather warms expect to see the Truckee River rising over the next few weeks so check the flows on my Fishing Venues page if you plan on fishing the Truckee. The Sections below Boca may get pretty big. The Little Truckee is there too and is a good alternate plan if the Big river gets too big or muddy.

Truckee**-*** The Truckee is fishing good and the flows are very manageable at the time I write this. The water is clear and temps are in the mid to upper 40's. Some very nice fish have been caught recently. Mostly nymphing but, one very hearty Brown did eat a dry and his buddy was interested to until a poor presentation sent him packing. Streamers have also produced. Fishing Pressure has been light overall. Skwalas(8-10), BWO's(18-20) and March Browns(16-14) are coming off on the overcast days. For nymphs Stones(8-10), Princes (8-12), Copper Johns, PT's 16-14, Birdsnest, haresear (12-14), and Burks Bottom rollers are a good start. Large Sculpin patterns (4) have also gotten crushed.

Little Truckee** The flows are good, the side creeks are flowing in and some are a little off color but, not enough to effect the fishing. The water temp the other day was 50 in the late afternoon. There are some hatches of BWO's (20-22), Winter Stones(14), Skwalas (10) and Midges (20-22). For nymphs PT's, Copper Johns, Mirco Mays, Zebra Midges, (18-22) and Stones (10). Streamers have had some success in smaller sizes (6-8)

NOTE: Please notice that the Rainbows are spawning in the shallows so try and avoid them and their redds.

Boca**, Prosser*, Stampede Reservoirs* The inlet at Boca is a pretty solid bet right now. As the runoff starts the feeder creeks in all of the reservoirs will draw the attention of hungry fish. Prospecting with a streamer may surprise you. Look for Prosser and Stampede to improve quickly in the next few weeks.

If your into light crowds, good deals on food in town, and getting down and dirty for your fish, Now is the time! I have openings and am ready to set up your next adventure. Time is running out to ski and fish in the same day.

See you on the water,
