Tahoe Fly Fishing Report Archives

Friday, July 3, 2010

The runoff has started to come down and we are getting the extra water from Prosser Ck and the bigger tribs now. The Reservoirs have been really good some days and tough others. Most all of the usual bugs started hatching last week and it appears that they are about two weeks off of the last couple seasons. July is going to be a really good month up here. Dries, indicators, and streamers are all working at the right times.

Truckee River**-*** The Truckee is fishing pretty well right now. Some very nice fat fish being caught. Some bigger ones putting on a show and getting away before the chance of a photo op. The areas along Hwy 89 and Glenshire Dr. are at very nice flows now, once you drop below Prosser Ck. the flow doubles and the canyon tribs are adding even more. Canyon and lower is fishing well, just bigger water, so watch your step or you could go for a swim. Everything is the river is hatching so the fish have a lot of choices. Small mayflies(16-18) in the first half of the day then some caddis(14) and larger Mayflies(14-10) later. The Little Yellow Stones are also coming off. The Greendrakes are out in sporadic numbers as well. The evening has been the best for dry flies. Indicator fishing and streamers have been doing well in the first half of the day. If your not having success try different stuff and move.

LIttle Truckee River** The flows on 7/1 were dropped to 30 cfs. These fish have been pounded and need a break. Use you imagination and go to some other river or lake.

North Yuba*** The North Yuba should be in prime shape this week. I have not been there yet but, anticipate great dry fly action on Ants, Mayflies, Stones, and Caddis. All bigger bugs should work(12-8)

Prosser Reservoir*** Prosser has been good for rainbows and browns. I suspect that the smallies are turning on as well but, have yet to get one this year. Midges(12-10) and Callibeatis(14) nymphs under an indicator have been good and well as pulling streamers on a Type II or intermediate line around structure is taking fish as well. Managed a couple of fish up top on Ants(10). This place will be getting better throughout the month as well.

Boca Reservoir** The inlet area is the place with the rest of the lake taken over now by water skier and personal water craft. Small beatis(18-20) and midges(18-20) should do the trick. Rip a streamer through early and late in the day and you might get a surprise.

Stampede**-*** Have not made it out here yet but, my scouts tell me it is good and fishing similar to Prosser reservoir. It is starting to come up some as well will the big water coming in from the Little Truckee. I plan on going there next week.

Milton*** Fished a couple of days at Milton and it was great. Very few people and the fish were looking up. Pretty much everything I tried worked, from pulling nymphs on the sinking line, to midges under the indicator, and flies on top. The ant(10) seemed to be the ticket throughout the day. And midge pupa (18-20) were doing well. Stripping small beatis patterns(18-20) on an intermediate line got some grabs as well. Should get better throughout the month.

High Country Lakes and Streams Still may be a couple weeks out. Tried one stream the other day above Jackson Meadows and it was still too high.

Now is the time to be here. And I feel August will fish pretty good as well. It is also time to think about Steelhead season. I will be guiding trips on the Rogue and Upper Klamath again this season. If you are looking for a trip, Trout or Steelhead, please give me a call and we can set up what will work for you.

See you on the water,

Brian
